INCLUSIVE – A CREATIVE FEMALE CONVERGENCE

Africans peoples are faced daily with various impacts arising from the Polycrisis befalling Mother Earth. These impacts and resilient stories have been told or showcased more by male-dominated documentary storytellers.

The voices of the female storytellers have not been as prominent as those of their male counterparts. Although these women tell excellent and even better stories as they face more disproportionate impacts from the crisis – especially the climate crises, their voices are least heard in the male-dominated photography and film industry. More to this are the other less spoken of challenges that arise when they are invited to tell document stories – from sexual harassment to inequality, gender biases, poor treatment, and respect issues for gender reasons to mention a few.

We hope by this engagement to listen, document, strengthen, and proffer solutions to the issues facing female documentary photographers and filmmakers and tell Africa’s stories through the use of audio-visual media, especially pictures, and films which have the power to reflect everyday life experiences and are a valuable tool for storytelling.

We hope to strengthen the female creative community in Nigeria and Africa, through the learning and sharing session on the Polycrisis, and skill sharing on portraiture and documentary photojournalism to better tell the African stories of impacts, strength, and resilience, especially of womanhood and climate change through themes of identity, empowerment and fragility, and the modernity versus traditionalism.
